What changes the cost of a small-business website?
Two quotes can both say “website redesign” and cover different work. Compare the pages, content, customer actions and handover before comparing the totals.
A page count helps, but it leaves important questions open: who writes the copy, where the photos come from, what needs to move and what happens after a customer clicks. For a WordPress redesign, the existing theme, editor and plugins also shape what can be reused and what needs rebuilding.
What the starting price means
Website projects start at $2,500 USD. Your proposal defines the pages, content support, features, review rounds and launch work included. The final quote depends on those decisions.
Brand identity, business systems, website care and SEO & content are scoped separately. The Services pricing explanation sets out that boundary.
Eight decisions to compare
- Pages and layouts. Which services, customer questions and languages need their own pages? Which layouts can be reused?
- Writing and content. Who supplies approved service details, writes or edits the copy, and organizes existing material?
- Photography and assets. Which usable images do you already have permission to publish? Is new photography, licensing or asset preparation needed?
- Brand identity. Can the current identity carry the new site, or does the project need separately scoped refinement first?
- Migration. Which pages, content and accounts must be retained or moved? When URLs change, include a map to relevant destinations and redirect checks. Google's site-move guidance explains that planning.
- Customer actions and tools. Is the job one inquiry path, an existing booking embed, or connected bookings, payments and records? Name the rules and connections to assess.
- Review and approval. Who approves the facts, copy and design? Which review stages and revision rounds belong in the quote?
- Launch and handover. Include agreed search foundations, page and form checks, launch tasks, account ownership and operating instructions.
Ask for these responsibilities in writing. Unanswered items can be resolved during scoping; you do not need every detail ready before the first conversation.
What affects WordPress redesign cost
WordPress redesign cost depends on the existing site and the work it needs next. Refreshing layouts in a suitable theme can involve a different scope from recreating pages tied to a page builder or replacing custom functionality. Ask for an assessment of the current setup before agreeing on the build.
| Part of the redesign | Work to include in the quote |
|---|---|
| Theme and editing approach | Review which layouts and content depend on the current theme or page builder. Agree what stays, what is rebuilt and how the owner will edit it. |
| Plugins and custom features | Identify the functions each plugin or custom feature provides, check compatibility, and define replacements, configuration and license ownership. |
| Content and existing URLs | List the pages, images, files and language versions to retain or move. Include reformatting, agreed writing support, relevant redirects and search checks. |
| Forms and connected tools | Check inquiry fields, saved records, confirmations and booking or payment connections. Name the tests; broader custom systems need a separate estimate. |
| Launch and handover | Include a review environment, database and file backups, recovery steps, live checks and owner training. Plan how newer live inquiries, orders or bookings will be preserved. |
Compare these items as defined work, with responsibilities and acceptance checks. Keeping a plugin or page builder is useful when it fits the agreed needs; replacing it adds its own setup, content and testing tasks. Include account access and any paid-license dependencies when estimating that work.

Compare two possible scopes
These are planning examples. Your proposal defines the actual work and fee.
A focused service website might use an existing suitable identity, supplied photography, agreed service pages and one inquiry path. The quote still needs to name content, review, testing and handover responsibilities.
A booking-led project might also need class rules, ticket credits, payment choices and owner records. Assess what suitable existing software can handle, then quote any connections or custom systems separately, including their testing and support.
Aloha Florals 808 shows photography, pricing and request-specific inquiry questions. Migiwa Yoga Space shows selected-class booking, ticket/payment choices and owner tools. Both help identify decisions to scope.

Count what continues after launch
List domain, hosting, paid-software and payment-processing costs, who pays them, and what ongoing technical support covers. Optional website care and optional SEO & content have their own scopes and fees. Agree those choices alongside account ownership and handover so the build quote and continuing responsibilities are clear.
For WordPress, list any theme or plugin license renewals and who holds each account. Agree who handles WordPress, theme and plugin updates, compatibility checks, backups and recovery. Separate those continuing responsibilities from one-time redesign work, and confirm which third-party fees are paid directly by the business.
Questions about the quote
Can we use our existing content and photos?
Bring what you have permission to use. Agree which material is ready, which needs editing and who supplies missing pieces. Existing content can still need organizing for the new pages.
Can we start with a smaller scope?
Choose the customer action and pages that matter first. Ask which work can stand on its own and which depends on another decision. Record deferred work so it is clear what the first scope delivers.
What if the brief changes?
Ask how additions are assessed and approved before they become part of the job. Clarify their effect on the fee, milestones and support rather than assuming another page or connection fits the original quote.
Does a WordPress redesign require new hosting?
Review the existing hosting against the project's requirements before deciding. A redesign can stay with a suitable host. If a move is needed, include the transfer, domain and email dependencies, testing and recovery in the quote. Make clear who handles the move and which continuing fees change.
