WordPress vs custom website for your business
Choosing between WordPress and a custom website starts with two questions: what will your team publish, and what must happen when a customer takes action? A service website with an inquiry form and a studio platform with ticket credits need different work, even when both have a beautiful homepage.
WordPress gives a project an established content management system. A custom application lets the team define its content tools and business processes around an agreed scope. We use both approaches. Our Aloha Florals 808, Birdsong Kyoto and Migiwa Yoga Space projects show how the choice relates to the work a business needs to do.
Understand what WordPress and custom mean
A WordPress website can have a design and functionality built specifically for your business. Its theme controls the presentation, while plugins and project-specific code can add features. WordPress's features overview describes its publishing tools, themes and extensions. Choosing WordPress still leaves important decisions about design, editing and customer actions.
In this comparison, a custom website means a build outside WordPress, with the pages, application features and editing tools selected or developed for the project. It may use an existing content management system for publishing. The proposal should identify what is ready to use, what needs configuration and what the team will build.
Ask for those details when two quotes use different labels. A custom WordPress theme, a configured booking plugin and a separately developed booking platform describe different scopes.
Can I edit a custom website myself
Yes, when suitable editing tools are included in the build. Agree which tasks you need to handle, such as changing a service description, adding a class or replacing a photo. Ask to try those tasks before handover. A custom build needs an explicit editing scope, just as a WordPress project needs an editor set up for the content you will manage.
Compare the work each approach needs
Use the same requirements when reviewing both options. This comparison identifies what to agree before choosing a build.
| Decision | WordPress approach | Custom website approach |
|---|---|---|
| Publishing content | Start with WordPress's editor and define the pages, fields and layouts your team can manage. | Choose an existing publishing tool or include suitable editing screens in the scope. |
| Design | Choose or develop a theme and agree how it supports your content and brand. | Develop the interface around the selected content and application tools. |
| Customer actions | Evaluate suitable plugins, connections and custom functionality against the required workflow. | Define which existing services to connect and which workflow features to build. |
| Ongoing care | Name responsibility for WordPress, theme and plugin updates, backups and checks. | Name responsibility for code dependencies, hosting, connected services, backups and checks. |
| Handover | Document accounts, licenses, editing tasks and any custom code. | Document accounts, code access, data, deployment and the owner tools delivered. |
Both approaches need a person responsible for the site after launch. Include that responsibility in the comparison alongside the initial design and build.
What our WordPress projects needed
For Aloha Florals 808, the website brings together floral photography, service pricing and inquiries. A wedding request needs different information from a lei order. We built its presentation and inquiry flow around those needs within a custom WordPress theme. This is an example of a WordPress project with deliberate design and functionality beyond choosing a ready-made layout.
Birdsong Kyoto uses a custom WordPress theme for complete Japanese and English pages. Parents can select an available trial date and receive a confirmation email in the language they used. The owner can manage both language versions through the editor. The work includes publishing, language navigation and the trial-booking journey in the same project.
For a business with similar needs, assess how WordPress can support the content and customer journey before proposing another platform. Include the required extensions, custom work and maintenance in that assessment.
What Migiwa needed from a custom platform
Migiwa Yoga Space connects a bilingual website with class bookings and studio tools. Students can choose a class, keep their selection through sign-in, and book using ticket credits, card payment or cash at the studio. Ticket-book purchases and the use of a credit remain separate events, so using a credit does not record another sale.
The owner needs the same activity to make sense in a class calendar, rosters, attendance, payment records and cash logging. We built a custom platform around that connected work. Those operating rules give the project a clear application scope alongside its public website.
This example shows the questions to investigate when comparing platforms: how credits work, what counts as a payment, what the owner sees and how exceptions are handled. Compare suitable existing tools and a custom build against those rules. Our guide to when a studio needs more than a booking calendar explains that earlier decision.
Can WordPress connect to a separate booking system
Yes, where the chosen tools provide suitable connections. A WordPress website can present the business while another service handles bookings. Check how availability, customer details, payment status and confirmations pass between them. Agree which system holds the authoritative record, what happens when a connection fails and who supports it before committing to the integration.
Compare build cost and ongoing maintenance
Ask for comparable scopes before judging the price. Content preparation, a custom design, language versions, migration, integrations and owner training can all add work to either approach. A platform name alone does not tell you what a quote includes.
Separate the initial project fee from hosting, software licenses, connected services, routine care and future changes. For WordPress, agree responsibility for core, theme and plugin updates and the checks around them. For a custom platform, agree responsibility for code dependencies, hosting, connected services and recovery. Include a practical way for another developer to take over the agreed scope.
Have the team demonstrate the editing and owner tasks you will use. Include account ownership, access, instructions and the support arrangement in the handover. Our guide to what affects website cost helps you compare the work behind the quote. Website design and broader systems development have their own agreed scopes and fees.
Check SEO and performance in the proposed build
The platform name alone does not establish search visibility. Both approaches need useful content, accessible pages, descriptive titles, working links and a clear site structure. Google's SEO Starter Guide explains these foundations and how to check what Google can see.
Ask the team to demonstrate how the proposed site handles these tasks. Test representative pages and customer journeys on phones with realistic content, including the images, forms and booking steps people will actually use. Agree how performance and accessibility will be checked, and how issues will be handled.
If you are replacing a website, include existing URLs, redirects, important content and search reporting in the migration scope. Our WordPress redesign checklist covers the inventory and launch checks. A change of platform needs its own reason alongside the design work.
Ask these questions before choosing
- What content will our team update, and can we try those editing tasks?
- What must an inquiry, booking or purchase do for the customer and for our team?
- Which requirements can suitable existing tools meet, and which need custom work?
- What does the initial fee include, and which continuing costs are separate?
- Who handles updates, failed actions, backups and recovery after launch?
- What code, accounts, records and instructions will be available at handover?
- What existing content and URLs must be preserved if we replace the current site?
Use the answers to request a defined proposal. When an important workflow is still unclear, a focused discovery phase can establish its requirements and options before a separate build decision.
